I've been using Windows 8 since it first launched. I have installed it on about 5 different computers using the retail upgrade downloaded for Windows 7 computers, which I have subsequently updated to Windows 8.1. I have never had this issue until the currentcomputer I am working on for which I have purchased the OEM version of Windows 8.1.I first set up a local profile and then set up 3 separate profiles using Microsoft accounts.
For each new profile, Windows is defaulting to 150% zoom on the display settings. Internet Explorer is defaulting to 175% zoom. In the desktop version of IE 11,the zoom on the status bar has a Ctrl+0 shortcut for 175%.
I just took a look at my main computer that I use at home and the Ctrl+0 shortcut is for 100% zoom. That computer is one that I had performed a clean install of Windows 8 and then updated to Windows8.1 when that update was released.I can't understand why the new computer with a clean install of Windows 8.1 is defaulting to zoom in so much instead of having the default at 100% like a normal desktop computer, which is my intended usage for this computer. Just to be clear, I don't have any issues adjusting the display settings. I'm just trying to figure out why an adjustment is necessary to begin with. The default zoom levels for all computers I've ever worked with before has been 100%, but this computeris at 150% for the Windows display settings and 175% for the Internet Explorer zoom level.
I have no trouble making the changes, but it is back to the larger zoom level for each new user profile I set up, which requires me to make the changes to the displayall over again.Method 1: I don't understand what setting my resolution to 1024x768 is going to accomplish. I am using a 1920x1080 display, so why would I want the resolution to be anything less than that?Method 2: I have adjusted these settings. The 'large' zoom level was configured while connected to my 37' Vizio 1080p LCD TV. When I connected it to my dad's 19' LCD computer monitor, the zoom reverted to the 'smallest' and thedefault zoom in Internet Explorer changed from 175% to 100%.I had a computer I used with Media Center in my living room connected to a 1080i CRT TV.
Computer text is barely readable on this TV, so I took it to my bedroom to perform the upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Prior to the upgrade, the zoom levels wereat 100%.

After the upgrade to Windows 8.1, the zoom levels changed to 150% on Windows and 175% in IE. Moving the computer back to my CRT TV reverted the zoom levels back to 100%I don't understand what specs on the monitor that Windows is using to make the determination of how to adjust the zoom level, but it seems that is what is happening. I just didn't know what was going on, so it had me concerned that the display did not appearas I expected.
