Reactivating the thread as we had a discussion with Durabys in the Stellaris thread about Star Ruler:So, about what you were asking, Star Ruler 1 is, IMO, much better than 2, for the simple reason that the second game was not finalized and didn't really get out of Beta. The 2 has a superb diplomatic system that would serve a lot in Stellaris, but for the rest, it's definitely unpolished. The one works much better for pretty much everything else but is lacking for the diplomacy part. SR 1 with 2's diplomacy would be a jewel.

Wow, I've just started another SR2 game and.ugh, that whole 'resource level' system is an absolute shitshow IMO, while the tech tree doesn't feel rewarding while overly complex for no real gain. SR1, at least, gives the idea of a gloriously absurd arms race with planet-sized ships being required to fight it out in the end.Edit: I definitely stand by my earlier judgement. SR2 is unpolished as hell. Its economy system is micromanagement hell that manages to be frustrating, overly complex and nonsensical, particularly with the unforgivable lack of clear and explicit documentation. Its diplomatic system is IMHO, however, the gold standard of what you should have in a 4X, with the card/influence/vote system being splendid for games against both AIs and human players.As much as I loved (and still love) Star Ruler 1 with its glorious level of Tarkin-approved devastation, Star Ruler 2 deserves a clear thumb down. There's quite a few different economic systems going on, and while I find some of them not very fun the standard one isn't that bad.Then again I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a game, the default 'Terran' economic system of building up a web of connected planets to get one to T5 and the planet city building stuff for each is something I find fairly engaging to do in my economic empire building. Let alone grabbing some asteroid resources and using those as well. I can see that, that level of economic management isn't for everyone though.Ore gathering can be rather 'meh' at times but it's only used for the big picture weaponry or making world rings and all that, and there's quite a bit of a slow start a lot of the time.I do agree about the lack of clear and explicit documentation for some of the more fine details though yeah. I booted up Star Ruler 1, and was quickly reminded of why I uninstalled it. The whole game has no depth, just numbers getting bigger over time - and the sense of scale I remembered was much worse.

Sure, you could have planet sized ships, but that's all you could have. Larger ships were so much better than smaller ships that the best military strategy was too big the biggest you could afford and then keep upgrading it/making it larger, and past making ships bigger the game doesn't have much.Shrug. I have done just this this evening to see if I could add some Wing Commander models to make a new ship set (I have GBs of high definition models for this franchise) and it seems like a lot of the files are actually pretty accessible, even with Notepad.The whole thing could be a matter of changing some variables. If you can find in GA the jump price, try to see if you can make it increase with something oike the fifth power of the size, so a ship four times bigger will have a jump cost a thousand times higher or something like this. Trust me, modding the gameplay can be a fantastic experience. At least it is for me in Homeworld.
