FWIW: The term 'locked' does not really depict what is going on in the file system.It is actually the case that any program opening a file gets to say who can share access to the file. The usual case is that a program with a file open for write will demand exclusive access, because (a) two writers tends to lead to data corruption unless they are designed to co-operate, and (b) unsynchronized reading of a file being written tends to lead to the reader getting half-updated data unless designed for co-operation.Programs don't do this to 'lock' files, they do this to ensure correct and reliable operation (and the various options are referred to as 'sharing modes').Why you don't always notice this is because many programs don't keep files open for long. E.g., if you are editing a file in Notepad, the file is not open. Notepad opened the file, read its contents, and closed the file. When you 'save', notepad will open the file, write its contents, and close the file. True, but on my systems I usually one see 1 file that Avast says is locked and can't be scanned and that is the page file. Sometimes those previously discussed TOPS files but that is it.

I do not have any other files on my PCs (5) that Avast reports as locked and unable to be scanned. Admittedly I don't have much on my systems.2. That would be kind of odd since they are older than the one that this is occurring on.3. I'll try that.dave,Based on what I have read so far my best guess is that this is log file for a driver or driver like thing. My guess for why it is on this machine and no others is that the other PCs don't have whatever hardware this one has that is using this driver.My guess as to why it keeps coming up as locked by Avast is that the driver is not closing it for some reason.
Maybe it needs it to be open whenever it is running; and it is always running?Guess I'll try reading the log and seeing if I can figure out what is creating it. Also try scanning it from safe mode or something and see if Avast can.Thank you all. Very much appreciated.
